The Shallow Sea

The Shallow Sea is a mega-archipelago continent formed by the impact of a destroyed Great Old One called Black Star. The vast majority of its waters lie within the shallow Epipelagic (sunlight) and Mesopelagic (twilight) zones, surrounded by the deep Abyssopelagic zone. The technological and cultural level ranges from colonial to Enlightenment-era Earth.

The setting is the darker aftermath of a previous civilization’s destruction. Before the apocalypse, a civilization existed here in contact with the Terran Vanguard, possessing knowledge and capabilities that are now lost. Black Star’s death — and the psychic backlash of its failed resurrection — shattered that world and remade what remained into something bleaker.

Geography

The Shallow Sea is defined by its waters. Most of the inhabited world consists of islands, archipelagos, and shallow sea zones where light still penetrates. Beyond the shallows lies the Abyssopelagic zone — deep, dark, and home to things that do not welcome visitors.

Navigation, trade, and warfare are all shaped by the sea. Communities are isolated by water and connected by it. The ocean is both highway and barrier.

The Cataclysm

The event that created the Shallow Sea was the destruction of Black Star — a Great Old One whose death did not end its influence. Black Star’s final resurrection attempt failed, sending a psychic backlash across the world that:

• Destroyed the pre-existing civilization
• Warped psychically inclined people into the Shattered
• Created psycho beasts — abominations born from thoughts that didn’t survive the backlash intact
• Remade the geography into its current archipelago form

The world of the Shallow Sea is, in a very literal sense, built on the corpse of something that tried to come back and couldn’t.

The Facility

Among the remnants of the previous civilization are structures that predate the cataclysm. At least one — a facility originally built by or in contact with the Terran Vanguard — has survived beneath the water, now partially flooded and guarded by ancient automatons and a still-functioning AI. The facility was originally a power plant, and its existence hints at a world that was once far more advanced than what currently occupies the surface.

Tone

The Shallow Sea is bleaker and more contained than Wiege — an isolated world dealing with the immediate aftermath of cosmic violence. The threats are closer, the resources thinner, and the history shorter but more raw. Where Wiege has had millennia to develop complex geopolitics, the Shallow Sea is still in the early stages of rebuilding from something terrible.
